Wesley’s first headquarters in London was at the old cannon foundry, refitted for religious purposes. Here is the sign commemorating the general spot. What followed was City Road Chapel, but none of this would have happened if first Charles and then John had had what we call the Aldersgate experience, where their hearts were strangely warmed. In both cases, the Wesley had been Christians for a while. At first John said this was his conversion experience, later he says he went from having the faith of a servant, to the faith of a son. It was in any case a considerable upgrade, and led to the revival movement. The second sign below which is a large one on top of the Museum of London in a courtyard is John’s account in his Journal of what happened off Aldersgate street on a night he would never forget, which changed him and his ministry. To avoid confusion, some of the things in the Foundry building were later moved to City Road chapel, hence this sign on the side of that chapel….
