The Women of Pompeii– Part One

At Pompeii we arrived in time for this opening exhibit on women of that city before the disaster.  Pompeii was the ancient equivalent of a resort city, the difference was the elites had slaves, lots of domestic slaves, and in some cases agricultural slaves that worked the vineyards and other crops.  But the women who left remains such as jewelry or busts or statues, rather than just ashes are what this exhibit is of course mainly about.

There are not that many in tact statues of women that have been found in or near Pompeii but this is one of them. This presumably is a statue that was in a courtyard in a home, as the woman doesn’t have a headcovering.

There is a lot to say about elite women in Pompeii, but we must never forget the horrors that happened to them that hot summer day in A.D. 79, to be precise August 24th.  Here below you begin to get an idea of what it was like to be trapped in Pompeii and not being able to escape….

August then is the perfect time to review the evidence from this remarkable exhibit at Pompeii.  After all, it only happened less than 2,000 years ago.
