Unlike Alexander’s Empire that even stretched as far as India, having conquered Persia first, the Roman Empire never got much further than Syria, dealing with Parthians, and then after it reached its apex under Trajan and Hadrian it began shrinking particularly in the east. In 505 A.D, as the Roman Empire was waning and the Persians were dealing with their own problems in the East, Emperor Anastasius decided to rebuild the village and fort of Dara. The remains you see today of the enormous necropolis and streets are from this period. Here first are some shots of the necropolis… and cisterns.

While Rome could call itself ‘the eternal city’. it’s empire rose and fell like all other merely human attempts at domination of other peoples and plsces.
