Likely, Timothy was a timid person, but Paul recognized in him the qualities of a leader. Instead of urging Timothy to become more courageous, Paul wanted to plant in his heart three virtues: (1) Power-the ability to act responsibly in the face of fear; (2) love-the first fruit of the
Spirit (Galatians 5:22); (3) self-discipline-the last fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:23). Paul is reminding the young leader that fears are no match for the resources God’s Spirit brings to the life of a believer
2 Timothy 1:7 – 7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
