It is not often, perhaps never that hard-nosed reviewers say that an animated feature film is the movie of the year, but this one got that label, not to mention that it has an A rating (96%) on Rotten Tomatoes. Here’s a little taste of what they are talking about…
What this clips show is just how far CG and modern animation has come— it is spectacular and many scenes in this film are beautiful in fact beautiful enough to be paintings. But the real gem of this 1 hour 40 some minute film is the story line that indicates that kindness is a survival skill, and what makes community possible– even among predators. At the heart of the story is a relationship between a robot names Roz, and a gosling that is given the name Bright Bill by Roz. Like various other robot movies, the robot is more human than the human beings who built it and programmed it. (think Wall-E). Of course there is a lot of action, lots of chase scenes, lots of danger— and improbably, predators who are taught to live together without eating each other— which of course is a bit of a stretch, to say the least.
But never mind, this film is a shot to the heart, and has a lot of heart. I found myself near tears several times— and guess what, there is no bad language, no sex, and frankly not much of any reason not to take your kids to see this morality tale. This year has not been very good in terms of good movies (and no Beetlejuice Beetlejuice wasn’t one of them– sorry Tim Burton, it doesn’t come close to the first one), but the Wild Robot is a winner. ENJOY!
