This title has been associated with the First Gospel as long as it has been known. It was named this because its author was believed to be Matthew the apostles of Jesus.

Purpose
The original purpose of this Gospel was to provide a written proclamation of the redemption God brought about through Jesus with an emphasis suitable for Jewish Christians: Jesus is the promised Messiah. God’s people who read and study Matthew today should view it with this original purpose in mind.
