St. Paul’s Cathedral Part One 2026-10-04T15:40:00-04:00 Ben Witherington Sir Christopher Wren’s masterpiece, St. Paul’s cathedral is visible even from the river, and if you look carefully you can also see the tourists near the apex of the steeple. Wren was polymath, by which I mean remarkable at several subjects. He was “an English architect, astronomer, mathematician and physicist who is one of the most highly acclaimed architects in the history of England.” It will take several blog posts to deal with all there is to say about this incredible building, which was a place where famous figures such as John Donne and John Wesley preached, and which survived the Nazi blitz during WWII. By definition a cathedral is a church without a parish, but rather is for the whole city and area in which it is situated. It does not have members in the same way most local churches do. The front facade is formidable but not ornate like the interior domes as we shall see.
