In April, Logos partners with Eerdmans for a great Free Book of the Month (and a bunch of deep discounts on other Eerdmans publications). Until April 15, you can add The Challenge of Jesus’ Parables, edited by Richard Longenecker, to your Logos Library for free. I have assigned readings from this book in my Gospels classes many times, so I can highly recommend it for anyone interested in Jesus’s parables.
The Challenge of Jesus’ Parables is a collection of thirteen essays:
- From Allegorizing to Allegorizing: A History of the Interpretation of the Parables of Jesus (KLYNE R. SNODGRASS)
- The Genre of the Parables (ROBERT H. STEIN)
- Parables in Early Judaism (CRAIG A. EVANS)
- Mark’s Parables of the Kingdom (Mark 4:1–34) ( MORNA D. HOOKER)
- Matthew’s Parables of the Kingdom (Matthew 13:1–52) ( DONALD A. HAGNER)
- Luke’s Parables of the Kingdom (Luke 8:4–15; 13:18–21) (RICHARD N. LONGENECKER)
- “Produce Fruit Worthy of Repentance”: Parables of Judgment against the Jewish Religious Leaders and the Nation (Matthew 21:28–22:14 par.; Luke 13:6–9) (ALLAN W. MARTENS)
- On Being Ready (Matthew 25:1–46) (RICHARD T. FRANCE)
- Parables on God’s Love and Forgiveness (Luke 15:1–32) (STEPHEN C. BARTON)
- Parables on Poverty and Riches (Luke 12:13–21; 16:1–13; 16:19–31) (STEPHEN I. WRIGHT)
- Parables on Prayer (Luke 11:5–13; 18:1–14) (WALTER L. LIEFELD)
- Strange Neighbors and Risky Care (Matthew 18:21–35; Luke 14:7–14; Luke 10:25–37) (SYLVIA C. KEESMAAT)
- “Everyone Who Hears These Words of Mine”: Parables on Discipleship (Matthew 7:24–27//Luke 6:47–49; Luke 14:28–33; Luke 17:7–10; Matthew 20:1–16) (MICHAEL P. KNOWLES)
In addition to the free book, there is a wide range of discounted books this month:
- E. J. Young, An Introduction to the Old Testament, $4.99
- Ralph P. Martin, Worship in the Early Church, $5.99
- Godfrey Ashby, Go Out and Meet God: A Commentary on the Book of Exodus, $6.99
- Harry Boer, A Short History of the Early Church, $7.99
- Christopher J. H. Wright and David J. Shepherd, Ezra and Nehemiah (The Two Horizons Old Testament Commentary)
- Richard Longenecker, Contours of Christology in the New Testament, $9.99
- Hans Schwarz, The Human Being: A Theological Anthropology, $10.99
- Martin Westerholm and Stephen Westerholm, Reading Sacred Scripture: Voices from the History of Biblical Interpretation, $11.99
- Peter H. Davids, The Letters of 2 Peter and Jude (Pillar New Testament Commentary), $12.99
- Peter C. Craigie, The Book of Deuteronomy (The New International Commentary on the Old Testament), 413.99
I reviewed Wright and Shepherd, Ezra and Nehemiah in the THOC series when it came out. Like most of the volume sin the series, it is very good. Peter H. Davids on the Letters of 2 Peter and Jude is excellent (it was on my top five commentaries on 2 Peter), and Craigie’s NICOT commentary on Deuteronomy is a great deal. It has been replaced by Bill Arnold (although only Deuteronomy 1-10 has been published, see my review of the new volume).
Remember, if you subscribe to one of the Logos plans, you get another 5% off these already great prices. This Logos Free Book of the Month promotion runs through April 15. Look for a new free book on April 15 at 9:00 AM PST.
It is always a good time to get a new Logos Subscription. Although some are upset with the changes in the pricing model, there is nothing to fear. Essentially, you are paying what you would have once every two years for the old-model upgrades. This new subscription plan allows Logos to push new features every few months rather than one big upgrade every two years.
Even if you do not subscribe to Logos, you keep all your previously purchased books. Nobody will lose anything for not getting a subscription. You do not need to upgrade to a subscription model. If you do upgrade, you will get access to some cool new AI tools, which may or may not be necessary. They just added a Bible Study tool (like their sermon prep tool) that scrapes questions from your library to help generate a Bible Study or discussion.
As always, you can use the (free) basic edition or inexpensive Fundamentals collection to use these free and discounted books. If you do not already have Logos, you can save on Logos Subscriptions. Check out my first-look review of Logos 10.
