How Hardships Draw You Closer to God

Hardships are a part of life that no one can avoid. Every believer will face seasons of struggle, disappointment, loss, and pain. While these experiences can be difficult and sometimes overwhelming, God often uses them to draw His children closer to Himself. What may seem like an obstacle can become an opportunity to develop a deeper relationship with the Lord.

During times of comfort and success, it is easy to become distracted by the cares of life. People may rely on their own strength, wisdom, and resources. However, hardships remind us of our need for God. They reveal that true peace, strength, and security can only be found in Him.

The psalmist wrote:

“The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” (Psalm 34:18 KJV)

God is especially near to those who are hurting. When believers face difficulties, they often experience His presence in a deeper and more personal way.

Hardships encourage a stronger prayer life. When life is easy, prayer can sometimes become routine. During seasons of struggle, however, prayer often becomes more sincere and heartfelt. Difficult circumstances cause believers to seek God’s guidance, comfort, and strength with greater urgency.

Jeremiah 29:12 says:

“Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.”

God desires His people to seek Him, and hardships often become the very thing that drives them into His presence.

Trials also increase our dependence upon God. Human strength has limits, but God’s power is limitless. When we reach the end of our own abilities, we learn to trust Him more completely.

The Apostle Paul discovered this truth through his own struggles. God told him:

“My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9 KJV)

Paul learned that weakness was not a disadvantage when it led him to depend on God’s strength. The same is true for believers today. Hardships remind us that we cannot carry life’s burdens alone.

The story of King David provides many examples of how difficulties drew him closer to God. Throughout his life, David faced enemies, betrayal, persecution, and personal failures. Yet these experiences led him to seek God continually.

David wrote:

“When my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” (Psalm 61:2 KJV)

Rather than allowing hardship to push him away from God, David allowed it to bring him closer to the One who could sustain him.

Hardships also help believers gain a greater appreciation for God’s Word. During difficult seasons, Scripture provides comfort, wisdom, encouragement, and hope. Verses that may have once seemed familiar suddenly become deeply meaningful when applied to personal struggles.

Psalm 119:50 says:

“This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.”

God’s Word becomes a source of strength when circumstances are challenging.

Another way hardships draw believers closer to God is by teaching trust. Often, we cannot understand why certain things happen. We may not see God’s plan or know how a situation will turn out. During those moments, faith grows as we choose to trust God’s character rather than our own understanding.

Proverbs 3:5 reminds us:

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

Trust develops when believers continue following God even when answers are not immediately available.

Jesus Himself experienced hardship while living on earth. He endured rejection, suffering, and ultimately the cross. Because of His suffering, He understands every pain and struggle His followers face.

Hebrews 4:15 says:

“For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities.”

Jesus understands our hardships and walks with us through every trial.

Although hardships are never pleasant, they often become some of the most significant moments of spiritual growth. They teach us to pray more, trust more, depend more, and seek God more earnestly. Through every struggle, God is inviting us into a deeper relationship with Him.

When hardships come, remember that God has not left you. He is using those difficult moments to draw you closer to His heart. As you seek Him through your trials, you will discover His faithfulness, experience His comfort, and develop a stronger faith that can withstand any storm.
