Abner was the commander of King Saul’s army. After Saul’s death, David became king. Joab, a military leader who was loyal to David, killed Abner because Abner had tried to install one of Saul’s sons as the new King.

Joab took Abner “aside in the gate” of the city of Hebron, supposedly for a private talk. The vaulted openings through the massive walls of some ancient cities were ten to twelve feet thick. This dark passageway was an ideal place for Joab to commit this crime.

2 Samuel 3:2727 And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.
