A mortar was a huge jar or stone container in which a substance such as grain was crushed. This was done by pulverizing the grain in an up-and-down motion with a long, heavy stick known as a pestle.
This mortar-and pestle technique was a primitive way of grinding grain if a hand turned stone mill was not available (read Matthew 18:6)
Proverbs 27:22 – 22 Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet will not his foolishness depart from him.
