One of the incredible blessings believers receive through faith in Jesus Christ is the promise that they are heirs with Him. This means that those who belong to Christ share in the spiritual inheritance that God has prepared for His people. Being an heir with Christ is a reminder that believers are not only forgiven and redeemed, but they are also welcomed into God’s family and given a future filled with hope.
The Bible clearly explains this truth in Romans 8:16 and 17 which says, “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ.” This verse shows that when a person becomes a child of God through faith in Jesus, they also become part of God’s inheritance. They share in the promises, blessings, and eternal life that God has prepared.
An inheritance is something valuable that is passed down from a parent to their children. In the same way, God promises His children spiritual blessings that cannot be taken away. These blessings include forgiveness, eternal life, peace with God, and the promise of living with Him forever.
1 Peter 1:3 and 4 speaks about this inheritance by saying, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you.” This scripture reminds believers that their inheritance is not temporary like the possessions of this world. It is eternal and secure.
Through Christ, believers receive the promise of eternal life. John 3:16 declares this well known promise: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Eternal life is one of the greatest parts of the inheritance God offers His children.
Being an heir with Christ also means sharing in the relationship Jesus has with the Father. Through Christ, believers are welcomed into God’s presence and can approach Him with confidence. Hebrews 4:16 encourages believers by saying, “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
Another important part of being an heir with Christ is the promise of God’s kingdom. Jesus often spoke about the kingdom of God and the future hope prepared for those who follow Him. In Matthew 25:34 Jesus says, “Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” This promise reminds believers that God has been preparing something wonderful for them long before they were even born.
Even though believers face struggles and challenges in this life, their future is secure because of God’s promises. The difficulties of this world are temporary, but the inheritance God offers is eternal. The apostle Paul reminds believers of this truth in 2 Corinthians 4:17 which says, “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.”
Knowing that you are an heir with Christ also changes how you live your life today. It encourages believers to live with faith, gratitude, and purpose. They understand that their true treasure is not found in wealth or success on earth, but in the relationship they have with God and the future He has promised them.
Galatians 4:7 summarizes this truth beautifully: “Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.” Through Jesus, believers move from being separated from God to becoming part of His family with a secure inheritance.
When believers remember that they are heirs with Christ, it fills their hearts with hope and confidence. Their future is not uncertain because God has already promised them eternal life and a place in His kingdom.
Through faith in Jesus, believers receive more than forgiveness. They receive a new identity, a new family, and a future that will last forever. As children of God and heirs with Christ, they are part of the incredible promises and blessings that God has prepared for His people.
