Creatures by Design

Whether from culture, family, or even ourselves, sometimes as moms we can feel these expectations that we’re supposed to be able to do everything and do everything well. And there’s this idea that we should be supermoms.

We should be able to raise our kids and also maintain and build a career, get all the housework done and still spend quality time with each of our children every day. We should be able to prepare all these healthy meals from scratch. There are just all these expectations that we and others might put on ourselves. But while the Lord calls us to serve our families, he’s the only one who can truly do everything and do it all perfectly.

Every Hour I Need You

Every Hour I Need You

Katie Faris

Through personal stories and biblical reflections, Katie Faris walks with women, helping them contemplate God’s unchanging character and see how his purposes are at work, even in the everyday moments of motherhood.

When I’m tempted to be supermom or to want my kids to be superkids, there’s just this check and reminder that that’s not what God designed for me or for my children. I don’t need to put that burden on myself or that burden on them. Only God is God. And by design, we are creatures who are designed to depend on him. And that’s really a good thing.

We can feel guilty and discouraged by the things that we aren’t able to do or even just the things that we’re not. We can be frustrated by our limitations, whether it’s physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual. And we can even be tempted to compare ourselves with other people. There is a better way, and that’s to look to the Lord, who is able to do all things, and really to trust him.

Katie Faris is the author of Every Hour I Need You: 30 Meditations for Moms on the Character of God.
