What It Means to Keep Your Eyes on Jesus in the Middle of Storms

The story of Peter walking on water toward Jesus is one of the greatest lessons in the Bible about focus, faith, and trusting God during difficult times. In the middle of a violent storm, Peter experienced both victory and failure within moments. As long as his eyes were fixed on Jesus, he walked above the waves. But when he focused on the storm around him, fear caused him to sink. This miracle teaches believers the importance of keeping their eyes on Christ no matter what storms arise in life.

The story is found in Matthew 14:22 through 33. The disciples were crossing the sea when strong winds and waves began to shake their boat. The storm became intense, and fear filled their hearts. Then Jesus came walking toward them on the water during the darkest part of the night.

Matthew 14:27 says, “But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer it is I be not afraid.”

Peter answered Jesus with bold faith and asked permission to come to Him on the water. Jesus simply said, “Come.”

Matthew 14:29 says, “And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.”

Peter did something impossible because his attention was focused on Christ. The storm was still raging, the wind was still blowing, and the waves were still crashing, but Peter walked above the chaos because his faith was centered on Jesus.

This teaches believers an important spiritual truth. Faith becomes stronger when people focus on the power of God rather than the size of their problems. Many storms in life are designed to distract people and pull their attention away from Christ.

Storms can come in many forms. Some people face financial hardship, sickness, broken relationships, grief, anxiety, temptation, or spiritual attacks. During these moments, it is easy to become consumed by fear and worry. But the story of Peter reminds Christians that victory comes through keeping their eyes on Jesus.

Hebrews 12:2 says, “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.”

Jesus is the source and foundation of faith. When believers stay focused on Him through prayer, worship, Scripture, and trust, they gain strength to endure difficult situations.

However, Peter’s focus changed.

Matthew 14:30 says, “But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid and beginning to sink.”

The moment Peter shifted his attention from Jesus to the storm, fear entered his heart. This is exactly how fear works in the lives of many believers today. Problems begin to appear larger than God. Anxiety grows when people meditate more on danger than on God’s promises.

The enemy often tries to use storms to weaken faith and create doubt. He wants believers to focus on failure, uncertainty, pain, and fear instead of focusing on Christ. But the story teaches that spiritual stability comes from keeping eyes fixed on Jesus rather than circumstances.

Isaiah 26:3 says, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”

Perfect peace comes from a mind focused on God. Peter lost peace when he focused on the wind, but peace returned when Jesus reached out to save him.

Even though Peter began sinking, one of the most encouraging parts of the story is that Jesus did not let him drown. Peter cried out, “Lord, save me.”

Matthew 14:31 says, “And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him.”

This shows the mercy and faithfulness of Christ. Even when believers lose focus and begin to struggle spiritually, Jesus is still ready to rescue those who call upon Him.

Keeping your eyes on Jesus means trusting Him even when life feels uncertain. It means believing His promises above fear. It means choosing faith over panic and hope over despair. It means remembering that storms may surround believers, but they do not have to control them.

Colossians 3:2 says, “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”

Spiritually, this means believers must constantly direct their hearts and minds toward Christ instead of becoming consumed by worldly troubles.

When Jesus finally entered the boat, the storm ceased. The disciples then worshiped Him and declared that He truly was the Son of God. Their storm became a testimony of Christ’s power and faithfulness.

The story reminds Christians today that storms are temporary, but Jesus remains constant. Fear may rise like waves, but Christ is greater than every storm. When believers keep their eyes on Him, they can walk through difficulties with strength, peace, and faith.

No matter how fierce the storm becomes, Jesus is still standing above the waves, calling His people to trust Him.
