The Great Commission After the Resurrection

After the resurrection of Jesus Christ, everything changed not only for His followers but for the entire world. One of the most important moments that followed His resurrection was the giving of what is known as the Great Commission. This was not just a suggestion or a closing statement, it was a powerful command that gave direction, purpose, and mission to all who believe.

After rising from the dead, Jesus appeared to His disciples and spoke with authority. Matthew 28:18 says all power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth. This statement is important because it shows that the One giving the command has complete authority. The resurrection proved His power, and now He was sending His followers out under that same authority.

The Great Commission is clearly stated in Matthew 28:19 through 20 where Jesus said go you therefore and teach all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you and lo I am with you always even unto the end of the world. This command includes going, teaching, baptizing, and continuing in His word. It is a call to action for every believer.

The resurrection makes this commission possible. Without the resurrection, the message would have ended at the cross. But because Jesus lives, the message continues. The disciples were not spreading a story about someone who died, they were proclaiming a Savior who is alive. This gave power and urgency to their mission.

Another important part of the Great Commission is that it is global. Jesus said to teach all nations, meaning the message is for everyone, not just a specific group. The resurrection broke all barriers and made salvation available to all people. Acts 1:8 says but you shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you and you shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth. This shows that the mission starts where we are but extends everywhere.

The Great Commission also shows that believers are not alone in this mission. Jesus promised His presence. He said I am with you always. This means that as we share the message of the resurrection, we are supported by His presence and power. We are not sent out empty, but equipped and guided.

The resurrection also gave the disciples boldness to carry out this command. Before, they were afraid and unsure. After seeing the risen Christ, they became fearless messengers. They preached openly, healed the sick, and spread the gospel despite persecution. The resurrection turned ordinary people into powerful witnesses.

Another key part of the Great Commission is discipleship. Jesus did not just say to tell people about Him, He said to teach them to observe all things. This means helping others grow in their faith and live according to His teachings. The mission is not just about reaching people, but about building them up.

The Great Commission is still active today. It was not only for the disciples, but for all believers in every generation. The message of the resurrection continues to spread through those who are willing to share it. Whether through words, actions, or example, every believer has a role in this mission.

Mark 16:15 also records Jesus saying go you into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. This reinforces the importance and urgency of the mission. The resurrection is good news, and it is meant to be shared.

The Great Commission after the resurrection is a call to live with purpose. It reminds us that our faith is not meant to be kept to ourselves, but to be shared with others. It is an invitation to take part in something greater than ourselves.

Because Jesus rose, the mission continues. Because He lives, we are sent. The Great Commission is not just a command, it is a privilege to be part of spreading the message of hope, life, and salvation to the world.
