The Connection Between Faith and Miracles in the Walking on Water Story

The story of Jesus walking on water reveals a powerful connection between faith and miracles. This event was not only a display of the supernatural power of Jesus Christ, but also a lesson about how faith allows believers to trust God in impossible situations. The miracle shows that faith is not simply believing something in the mind. True faith is trusting God enough to obey Him even when circumstances seem frightening and uncertain.

The account is found in Matthew 14:22 – 33. The disciples were crossing the sea during the night when a violent storm arose. Strong winds and crashing waves surrounded their boat, and fear filled their hearts.

Matthew 14:24 says, “But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.”

The storm created an impossible situation for the disciples. Human strength and experience were not enough to overcome the danger around them. This reflects many situations believers face in life. People encounter storms that seem impossible to survive emotionally, spiritually, physically, or financially. In these moments, faith becomes essential.

Then Jesus appeared walking on the water toward them.

Matthew 14:25 says, “And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.”

This miracle revealed the divine power of Christ. Jesus walked on the very thing that frightened the disciples. The sea represented chaos and danger, yet it was completely under His authority. His presence showed that nothing is impossible for God.

Luke 1:37 says, “For with God nothing shall be impossible.”

When the disciples saw Jesus, fear overtook them at first. But Jesus spoke words of comfort.

Matthew 14:27 says, “Be of good cheer it is I be not afraid.”

Peter then responded with faith. He said, “Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.”

Jesus answered with one word: “Come.”

This moment reveals the beginning of the connection between faith and miracles. Peter had to trust the word of Jesus before he could experience the impossible. Faith required action. Peter could have remained safely inside the boat, but miracles happen when people are willing to trust and obey God beyond their comfort zones.

Matthew 14:29 says, “And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.”

Peter experienced a miracle because he acted in faith. For a moment, he did what no human being could naturally do. This teaches believers that faith opens the door for God’s power to move in impossible situations.

Hebrews 11:6 says, “But without faith it is impossible to please him.”

Throughout Scripture, miracles often followed faith. Moses stretched out his rod over the Red Sea by faith. Joshua marched around Jericho by faith. The woman with the issue of blood reached for Jesus by faith. Blind men cried out to Christ by faith. Faith does not create God’s power, but it positions believers to receive what God is able to do.

However, the story also reveals what happens when faith weakens.

Matthew 14:30 says, “But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid and beginning to sink.”

Peter began sinking when fear replaced faith. He shifted his focus from Jesus to the storm around him. This teaches that fear and doubt can interrupt spiritual confidence. Many believers start with faith, but difficulties, delays, and trials can cause them to lose focus on God’s promises.

James 1:6 says, “But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.”

Faith remains fixed on God even when circumstances look impossible. Fear focuses on the size of the storm, but faith focuses on the power of Christ.

Even when Peter’s faith weakened, Jesus immediately reached out His hand and saved him. This reveals another important truth about faith. Faith does not mean believers will never struggle or doubt. It means continuing to depend on Jesus even during weakness.

Romans 10:17 says, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Faith grows stronger through hearing and trusting the Word of God. Peter stepped onto the water because he believed the word Jesus spoke to him. In the same way, believers today strengthen their faith by trusting the promises found in Scripture.

The walking on water story also teaches that miracles are meant to point people toward Christ. After Jesus entered the boat and the storm stopped, the disciples worshiped Him and declared Him to be the Son of God.
