1s & 2s—Make a Bible Marker

Bible Story: Saul Did Not Listen to God 1 Samuel 13:1-4
Life Point: God wants people to do what He says.
Weekly Verse: Do what God says. Deuteronomy 5:32

Materials: Bible, 3-by-9-inch paper strips, permanent marker, crayons, colored stickers

  • Write the verse Do what God says on a strip for each child. Arrange the crayons and stickers on a table.
  • Give each child a strip with the verse. Open the Bible and say the verse. Lead the children to repeat it with you. Say that the Bible helps us learn what God wants us to do.
  • Tell the preschoolers to decorate their strips with crayons and stickers. Tell the Bible story as they work.

3–Pre-K—Build on a Word

Bible Story: Saul Did Not Listen to God 1 Samuel 13:1-4
Life Point: God wants people to do what He says.
Weekly Verse: Do what God says. Deuteronomy 5:32

Materials: Bible, Teaching Picture 4, masking tape, wooden blocks

  • Use the tape to make the word OBEY in large letters on the floor. (If you can’t tape on the floor, use a large piece of bulletin board paper, write the word, and lay it on the floor.) Lay the teaching picture with the blocks.
  • Invite kids to build on the word. Ask kids what obey means. (to do what someone says)
  • Open the Bible to Deuteronomy 5:32 and say: “Do what God says.” Comment that means obey. Say that Saul did not obey God.
  • As kids continue to stack blocks, show the teaching picture as you tell the Bible story.

Kindergarten—Play a Relay Game

Bible Story: Saul Did Not Listen to God 1 Samuel 13:1-4
Life Point: God wants people to do what He says.
Weekly Verse: Do what God says. Deuteronomy 5:32

Materials: Bible, 10 index cards, marker, masking tape

  • Write the words and reference of the Weekly Verse on index cards, one word per card. Make two sets. Mix each set of cards and place them against a wall. Tape a line 4–6 feet from the wall.
  • Invite a group of kids to play the game. Form lines of two teams behind the line. Tell the kids that you will count to five and the first child in each line should walk slowly to the cards, pick one up, and return. Continue in the same manner until kids have retrieved all cards.
  • Ask: “Was it hard to wait for your turn?” Say that in today’s Bible story, Saul did not wait for Samuel, and disobeyed God by doing Samuel’s job.
  • Encourage each team to work together to put the cards in order. Say the verse together.
