1s & 2s— Listen to Sounds

Bible Story: People Sang to God Ezra 2:69-70; 3:1-13
Life Point: God hears His people praise Him.
Weekly Verse: Praise God for He is good. Psalm 135:3

Materials: Teaching Picture 8; empty plastic water bottles with lids; rice, beans, small rocks, small jingle bells; hot glue gun

  • Make four shakers using different materials in each. Put a small amount of material in the bottle. Use hot glue to attach the lid. Display the shakers and the teaching picture.
  • As a preschooler uses a shaker, talk about the Bible story. Comment that the people sang and played instruments to praise God, and God heard them. 
  • As preschoolers try the different shakers, say the Weekly Verse.

3–Pre-K—Wave Scarves to Music

Materials: Teaching Picture 8, scarves, music

  • Sit on the floor near the music source with the scarves and the teaching picture.
  • As children join you, tell the Bible story and show the teaching picture. Comment that the people were praising God because the temple was being rebuilt. Say that God heard the people praise Him.
  • Play a song and guide the children to stand up and to wave scarves to the music. In between songs, say the Weekly Verse and encourage the children to repeat it.

Kindergarten—Paint to Music

Materials: Teaching Picture 8, paper, tempera cakes, cups of water, paintbrushes, painting smocks, Music

  • Tell kids that you will play some music and they should paint how the music makes them feel. Play a worshipful song as kids paint. Remind kids that we should praise God.
  • Before the session, print the Weekly Verse on the top of a paper for each child. Arrange the painting materials on a table. Place the teaching picture in the center of the table. 
  • As kids come to the table, point to the picture and tell the Bible story. Comment that the people sang to praise God and God heard their praises. Point to the words on the paper and read them to the kids. Lead kids to say the verse with you.
