An Intracoastal Adventure

1 day ago 16

My sister Laura arranged for us to take a short cruise on a 42 foot sloop called the Shamrock, captain by Jimmy who looks an awful lot like the captain on the famous old TV show Gilligan’s Island. While it was not quite a three hour cruise as the theme song goes it was a fun adventure.   The intracostal waterway is a waterway up and down the East coast that parallels the ocean but is inside the barrier islands on the coast of the southern states that border the Atlantic.  Here is Wiki’s report….

The Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) is a 3,000‑mile (about 4,800 km) inland waterway system along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States Wikipedia+1. It is not a single continuous route but is divided into two main sections. We will focus just on the east coast one, not the gulf coast one.

  • Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway – runs from Boston, Massachusetts (via the Annisquam River) southward along the Atlantic Seaboard, through New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, ending at Key West, Florida.

Here are some pictures of our adventure on a nice summer day in June, with some pretty strong winds, so we were able to sail on the outbound journey from Wilmington’s Masonboro sound.

The water in the intracoastal waterway is in fact seawater at Wilmington, and so somewhat tidal like the ocean.   We have neighbors here in Lexington who have sailed the southern part of the intracoastal down to Florida.

A good time was had by all.
